Somaiya Ayurvihar was founded by Shri K. J. Somaiya, who envisioned a healthcare institution that would complement the broader educational mission of Somaiya Vidyavihar. While Vidyavihar offered a wide spectrum of academic opportunities, medical education and healthcare were the missing elements. Having spent years personally organising medical camps in rural and underserved regions of India, our founder deeply understood the urgent need to bring healthcare to those without access.
A Sanskrit shloka he often recited became the soul of this vision:
Somaiya Ayurvihar was established to give life to this ideal. What began as a hospital dedicated to serving the underprivileged evolved into a teaching hospital—nurturing doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who would carry forward this mission with both compassion and clinical skill.
Today, Somaiya Ayurvihar continues its strong engagement with the community through sustained rural health initiatives and the dedicated work of our Department of Preventive and Social Medicine. Our commitment goes beyond treatment alone. We strive to foster integrated, wholesome health by bringing together modern medicine with Ayurveda, Yoga, and other holistic approaches to care.
We have made meaningful progress, yet our journey is far from complete. Globally, teaching hospitals represent the highest standards of patient care, education, and research. We must continue to aspire to the same—delivering exceptional treatment, advancing medical science, and remaining steadfast in our responsibility to the poor and underserved.
With the blessings of the Almighty, we remain dedicated to fulfilling the mission laid down by Shri K. J. Somaiya, serving society with humility, integrity, and purpose.
