K J Somaiya Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre was established in 1991 with a clear social purpose, to deliver ethical healthcare and quality medical education rooted in service to society.
Founded by Padmabhushan Karamshibhai Jethabhai Somaiya, the institution reflects a lifelong belief that success carries responsibility. His guiding principle, “What you receive from society, give back multifold”, continues to shape the values and direction of the Somaiya healthcare ecosystem.
This shloka reflects the core belief of Shri K J Somaiya—a life dedicated not to power or reward, but to the alleviation of human suffering.
Born into poverty in rural Maharashtra to Kutchi parents, Shri K J Somaiya rose from humble beginnings to build one of India’s most respected sugar enterprises. In 1939, he launched two sugar factories at Sakarwadi and Lakshmiwadi, marking the start of his independent business journey. Through innovation and scale, he soon became known as the Sugar King of India.
Despite commercial success, his deeper calling remained social service. At the age of 60, he handed over leadership of his business to his son and devoted himself entirely to philanthropy, focusing on healthcare access, education, and community upliftment.
Shri K J Somaiya believed that service must reach those beyond formal systems. For nearly ten consecutive years, he personally travelled to remote tribal regions of India to organise medical camps for communities with little or no access to healthcare.
These efforts brought together:
Leading doctors from Mumbai
Large groups of student volunteers from Somaiya Vidyavihar
Family members and social workers
Education formed the other pillar of his vision. Somaiya Vidyavihar was conceived as a complete educational pathway, allowing students to enter kindergarten and progress through school, college, or professional studies. His aim was not only academic achievement, but the creation of capable individuals and responsible citizens.
This philosophy led to the establishment of the Somaiya Trust in 1959, laying the foundation for a multidisciplinary educational and healthcare ecosystem.
Dr. Shantilal K. Somaiya followed in the footsteps of Shri K J Somaiya
The vision was carried forward and expanded by Dr. Shantilal K. Somaiya, who combined scientific rigour with social responsibility. As the leader of the K J Somaiya Medical Trust, he envisioned a multi-speciality medical centre, a comprehensive health city integrating patient care, medical education, and research.
Under his leadership:
K J Somaiya Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre took shape as a tertiary-care and teaching institution
Somaiya Vidyavihar expanded rapidly in academic and infrastructural capacity
Institutions dedicated to Indian philosophy, ethics, and culture were established, integrating values into education
Dr. Somaiya also made pioneering contributions to sugarcane research, ethanol technology, and applied agriculture, including transforming Sameerwadi in North Karnataka into a major sugar-producing region through farmer education and large-scale industrial vision.
Today, K J Somaiya Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre represents the continuity of this legacy, where modern medicine, education, research, and compassion converge.
Guided by service, strengthened by knowledge, and led by ethics, the institution remains committed to advancing healthcare that serves both individuals and society.
